The Return of Community

I’ve been marathoning Community for a couple weeks, trying to rewatch it all before the new season started. Don’t know why I thought it was important since it really wasn’t, but rewatching the show has made fall in love with it all over again. Such quality television - great writing, great acting, great subjects, great geeky references, and so on. It’s been sheer joy to take it in, and I admit that I’ve been a little bit more than obsessive.

That being said, after seeing tonight’s premiere… it was okay but mediocre at best, so I am a little worried. I know I should reserve judgment, give the new writers a chance to let the show come into its own again. But something was just off. The lack of Dan Harmon’s presence was so obvious.

When it was first announced that the show would be bringing in the writers of Happy Endings in, I was skeptical. Cuz Happy Endings is one of those shows that always looks good and funny in the commercials, but when you check it out it’s actually not that funny. There’s just one punch line after another, barely any room for actual conversation or character development. I don’t know, maybe I would need to watch it more but the couple episodes I’ve seen - I can only give them a big, giant MEH along with a shrug. I don’t feel at all compelled to catch shows like that every week - you know, only if nothing else is on. And tonight, the season 4 premiere of Community felt kinda similar - not quite as bad as the characters still remained pretty true to themselves. But I dunno, the timing, the plot - something didn’t feel right. And can you seriously see them doing another episode like Advanced Dungeons & Dragons with the feel it has now? Looks doubtful, so I can only hope future episodes will be better than tonight’s. I think I saw that in Joel McHale’s AMA some comment (not sure if it was from him or not) that the set feels more comfortable now, the actors have more say with their lines, etc. That’s great and all, but for the quality of the show to come down… I guess we’ll see.

Also, Britta & Troy? I know they’ve been hinting at them and playing with those characters a lot over the 3 seasons. But it’s just a little weird to me - like Ron & Hermione in Harry Potter. Are they even on the same wavelength? What do they have to talk about? If I recall correctly, in season 3 when Britta and Troy went on a date it was awkward (haven’t gotten to rewatching that part yet). Besides, isn’t she like 30 by now? And isn’t he 22? I wouldn’t cite ageism as a problem, except the writers did themselves - cuz if they didn’t go there with Jeff & Annie, why then Britta & Troy? I dunno, it’s not that it’s random but it seems a little too much. Cuz it’s like one thing for them to share an attraction, to have crushes. But a relationship? Eh. I think Jeff & Britta make more sense than that, even if they never put them together again.

Sadly, during the first 3 seasons I never got into the Community fandom on tumblr or anywhere else online really :(. Don’t know why, and I’m not sure if now’s the best time to join :/, but before giving the show a stamp of impending doom, hopefully it’ll return more to form like before.

Until then, I’m just gonna rewatch the old ones.
